10mm Round Top LED
10mm round-top LEDs are the largest standard through-hole LED size, designed for applications where the LED body itself needs to be visible from a distance or must physically fill a larger mounting hole. At 10mm diameter, these are the go-to choice for G-scale model railroad headlights and signals, 1:10 scale RC vehicle lighting, large panel-mount indicators on industrial and marine equipment, escape room prop panels, model lighthouse beacons, and high-visibility status displays on custom enclosures. We stock 10mm clear round-top LEDs in 9+ colors including red, orange, amber, yellow, green, blue, cool white, warm white, UV, and pink.
Scale modeling and RC applications: G-scale (1:22.5) and garden railroad modelers use 10mm LEDs for locomotive headlights, station platform lamps, and grade crossing signals — at this scale, the 10mm body represents a proportionally correct light fixture. Cool white is the standard for modern diesel headlights; warm white works for older steam-era lanterns. For 1:10 and 1:8 scale RC crawlers and trucks (Traxxas TRX-4, Axial SCX10 III, Redcat Gen8), a 10mm LED represents a realistic 100mm (4-inch) headlight — bright enough to be functional on night trail runs, not just decorative. Red for taillights, amber for turn signals, and white for headlights. The clear lens focuses the beam forward, mimicking how a real headlight reflector concentrates light into a spot pattern. Lighthouse hobbyists pair a 10mm white or warm white LED with a 555 timer circuit or slow PWM from an Arduino to create a realistic pulsing or rotating beacon flash inside a scale lantern housing.
Escape rooms, displays, and industrial panels: Escape room designers and puzzle-panel builders use 10mm LEDs as solve-state indicators — the large illuminated surface is readable from across a dim room without squinting. Green for “solved,” red for “locked,” and blue or amber for “active hint available.” Haunted attraction builders use red and UV 10mm LEDs for high-visibility eye effects in large animatronic skulls, demon heads, and wall-mounted gargoyle props where a 5mm LED would not fill the eye socket. For industrial control panels and marine instrument dashboards, the 10mm body matches standard panel-mount cutout sizes found in legacy equipment, making them a direct replacement for incandescent pilot lights.
Colors, wavelengths, and lens characteristics: All 10mm round-top LEDs in this category have a water-clear lens that focuses light into a forward beam. The wider lens produces a slightly broader beam than a 5mm round-top — typically 20–40° depending on the die placement — while still delivering a concentrated spot pattern. Each product page lists the peak wavelength in nanometers and brightness in millicandela (mcd). White LEDs are available in warm white (~3000–4000K) and cool white (~5500–6500K). UV LEDs (395–405nm) work for blacklight panels in haunted houses and escape rooms where coverage from a single LED needs to span a larger area.
Electrical specs and resistor selection: Forward voltage by color: red/orange/yellow/amber ≈ 2.0–2.2V; blue/green/white/UV ≈ 3.0–3.2V. Maximum forward current: 20mA. The larger lens does not change the electrical specifications — 10mm LEDs use the same resistor values and wiring as 3mm and 5mm LEDs: 510Ω for red at 12V, 470Ω for white/blue at 12V, 150Ω for red at 5V. Use our LED resistor calculator for any supply voltage. For AC-powered applications (G-scale garden railroad transformers, DCC track power, 12V AC landscape wire), add a bridge rectifier and smoothing capacitor to convert to DC. See the AC/DCC wiring guide for a complete diagram. New to LEDs? Pre-wired LEDs include the resistor on the wire — just connect power and ground, no math needed.
Mounting and physical dimensions: The 10mm LED body fits a 10.2mm (13/32″) panel-mount hole. A standard 3/8″ (9.5mm) drill bit is slightly undersized; use a step drill, reamer, or 13/32″ bit for a clean fit. A 10mm LED holder or bezel provides a professional snap-in panel mount. Lead spacing is standard 2.54mm (0.1″) for breadboard and perfboard compatibility. The longer lead is the anode (+); the shorter lead with a flat on the base is the cathode (−). For RC vehicle headlights, hot-glue the LED behind the body shell lens opening and route the lead wires to the receiver’s lighting channel or a separate switch.
