Pre-Wired LEDs
Pre-wired LEDs take the electronics out of the equation: each one comes with lead wires already attached and a built-in current-limiting resistor sized for a specific supply voltage. Connect the positive wire to your power supply and the negative wire to ground — the LED lights up with no resistor calculation and no forward voltage lookup required. You may still need to solder the leads to your circuit or power terminals, but no component selection or electronics knowledge is needed. We stock over 100 varieties across five subcategories: 12V pre-wired LEDs, 9V pre-wired LEDs, 6V pre-wired LEDs, animated pre-wired LEDs, and pre-wired SMD LEDs.
DIP through-hole pre-wired LEDs are available in 3mm, 5mm, and 10mm sizes — the measurement refers to the lens diameter. The 3mm size fits through the tightest openings: locomotive boiler fronts, N-scale building windows, and narrow LEGO cavities. The 5mm is the most widely used size and works with standard LED holders and bezels. The 10mm size has the largest lens presence and is popular for high-visibility panel indicators and accent lighting. Supply voltages are 6V, 9V, and 12V (the 12V category is rated up to 15V max). Colors include red, orange, amber, yellow, green, blue, warm white, cool white, UV/violet, pink, and RGB.
Pre-wired SMD LEDs are a major part of this category and deserve special mention. These are surface-mount LEDs — in packages as small as 0402 and 0603 — with fine 30 AWG leads already attached, making them usable without a soldering iron or PCB. They are exceptionally small and are popular for LEGO lighting, ultra-fine model railroad detail work, and anywhere a standard 3mm DIP LED is still too large. Because of their size, they produce a more diffuse, realistic glow rather than a focused point of light — ideal for window and interior lighting effects.
Animated pre-wired LEDs contain a built-in integrated circuit that drives automatic effects: 1 Hz flashing and flickering candle are available in single colors, while RGB versions cycle through colors automatically. No external timer, microcontroller, or additional components are needed — just apply power. Animated LEDs require a DC power source; the built-in IC is not compatible with AC.
Power source notes: Standard (non-animated) pre-wired LEDs run on DC and are also compatible with low-voltage AC — DC is recommended for best brightness and longevity, but AC will work because the LED junction itself blocks the reverse half-cycle. Animated LEDs require DC: the built-in IC that drives the flashing or color-cycling effect is not designed to handle AC and will not function correctly without a proper DC supply. Two common AC sources where this causes problems are DCC model railroad track power and 12V AC landscape lighting transformers — both output AC, so animated LEDs connected directly will not animate correctly or may not light at all. The fix in both cases is the same: add a bridge rectifier to convert AC to DC, plus a 100 µF filter capacitor in parallel to smooth the rectified output and give the IC a stable supply voltage. Standard (non-animated) pre-wired LEDs do not need the capacitor — the rectifier alone is sufficient since there is no IC to destabilize. The MB1S mini bridge rectifier works well for both applications.
Standard DIP pre-wired LEDs use approximately 26 AWG stranded wire, flexible enough to route through most model structures and enclosures. Pre-wired SMD LEDs use finer 30 AWG wire suited to their smaller form factor. Leads are typically color-coded red (positive) and black (negative). Need bare LEDs for a custom circuit?
