10mm .5 Watt LEDs
10mm 0.5W LEDs deliver half-watt brightness in the largest standard through-hole package. At 10mm diameter and 100–150mA drive current, these produce dramatically more light than a standard 20mA indicator LED — making them the right choice for G-scale model railroad headlights, 1:10 and 1:8 scale RC vehicle lighting, large panel-mount indicators, high-visibility prop displays, escape room solve panels, and any project where a single through-hole LED needs to do real illumination work rather than just indicate status. This is the highest-power through-hole LED you can use without a heatsink or metal-core PCB, making it the easiest high-brightness option for hobbyists who want maximum output with minimum thermal complexity.
Scale modeling and RC vehicle lighting: G-scale and garden railroad modelers use 10mm 0.5W LEDs for locomotive headlights that remain visible even under direct daylight conditions — a standard 20mA LED washes out in outdoor layouts where ambient light overwhelms a dim indicator. At 1:10 and 1:8 scale, the 10mm lens is proportionally correct for truck and crawler headlights on Traxxas TRX-4, Axial SCX10 III, and Redcat Gen8 platforms. Cool white produces a realistic working headlight beam bright enough to actually illuminate the trail ahead on night runs. Red for taillights, amber for turn signals. White LEDs come in warm white (~3000–4000K) and cool white (~5500–6500K).
Electrical specs and resistor selection: Forward voltage: red/orange/yellow ≈ 2.0–2.4V; blue/green/white ≈ 3.0–3.6V. Drive current: 100–150mA. Always use a properly rated current-limiting resistor. At 0.5W drive levels, the resistor dissipates significantly more power than in a standard 20mA circuit. Example: white LED at 12V → Resistor power: Standard 1/4W resistors will overheat and fail. You cannot drive these from an Arduino GPIO pin directly (20–40mA max) — use an NPN transistor (2N2222, TIP120) or a MOSFET as a switch between the microcontroller output and the LED circuit.
Mounting, thermal, and physical dimensions: The 10mm LED body fits a standard 10.2mm (13/32″) panel-mount hole. Use a step drill or 13/32″ bit; a 3/8″ bit (9.5mm) is slightly undersized. A 10mm LED holder or bezel provides a professional snap-in panel mount. Lead spacing is standard 2.54mm (0.1″) for breadboard and perfboard compatibility. At 0.5W, these LEDs generate more heat than standard 20mA types but are designed for free-air operation without a heatsink. The through-hole leads dissipate enough heat for normal use. If mounted in a fully sealed enclosure with zero airflow, drive slightly below maximum current for extended lifespan. The 0.5W through-hole format is the highest-power LED you can use without thermal management hardware — the next step up (1W, 3W, 10W) requires a star-base surface-mount package with a metal-core PCB and heatsink.
