Description / 5mm Flat Top Concave Wide Angle Orange / Amber LED - Similar to Christmas LED Lights

The 5mm Amber/Orange LED (Flat Top Concave) delivers a wide viewing angle for even illumination from off-axis positions — the right choice when you need automotive gauge cluster and HVAC backlighting, Christmas string light LED replacements, and any application where maximum even coverage is critical.

The concave (dished inward) lens surface scatters light across nearly a full hemisphere — the widest beam in the flat top lineup (150-180 Degrees viewing angle). This is the variant to choose when standard flat top dispersion is not wide enough.

Why flat top instead of round top?

A standard round-top 5mm LED has a 15–30 degree beam — bright when viewed straight on, but nearly invisible from the side. The flat top (sometimes called a flat head LED or square LED due to its flat lens face) spreads that light wide, making the LED clearly visible whether you are looking down from a standing position, viewing a panel from across a room, or backlighting a translucent surface that needs even coverage with no hotspots.

Common applications

  • Automotive gauge cluster backlighting: turn signal indicator, caution/warning panel light. The wide beam eliminates the bright-center/dark-edges problem that round-top LEDs cause behind gauge faces. Drop-in for GM Silverado/Sierra, Honda Civic, Jeep Wrangler TJ, Ford Mustang, and Toyota/Lexus clusters. The concave lens provides maximum coverage — fewer LEDs needed for full-face illumination.
  • Christmas string light replacements: The ultra-wide beam makes concave flat tops an ideal LED replacement for burnt-out incandescent C7/C9 string light bulbs. The wide dispersion mimics the omnidirectional glow of traditional bulbs without the narrow-beam spotlight effect of standard LEDs.
  • Guitar pedal status indicators: Amber/yellow is a high-visibility indicator color for equipment status displays and caution warnings. The flat top is the standard choice on DIYStompboxes, r/diypedals, and The Gear Page. Visible from a standing position looking down at your pedalboard — a narrow round-top would appear dim from that angle.
  • Arcade pushbutton illumination: Lights up the entire translucent button cap (Sanwa, Seimitsu, Happ/IL) with even color instead of a single bright dot. Also used for marquee backlighting in BYOAC cabinet builds.
  • Model railroad building interiors: grade crossing flasher, simulated sodium streetlighting, warm vintage accent. The wide angle fills HO and N scale structure interiors with realistic lighting instead of a spotlight effect.
  • Panel indicators and control boxes: Fits standard 5mm LED holders and panel bezels. The wide angle means the indicator is readable from anywhere in front of the panel, not just dead center.
  • Breadboard prototyping: The flat top sits stable in a breadboard hole without rocking, and the wide beam is visible from normal desk-level viewing angles.

5mm is the standard size for most flat top applications — direct replacement for T10 wedge bulbs in automotive clusters, standard fit for arcade pushbuttons, and visible at distance for panel indicators.

Standard T-1 3/4 through-hole footprint. Fits all 5mm LED holders, bezels, and panel-mount clips.

Frequently Asked Questions

The flat top is visible from a standing position looking down at a pedalboard — a narrow round top LED would appear dim from that steep angle. The flat lens also sits flush in a panel bezel mount for a clean, professional look. Diffused flat tops are especially popular for a soft glow without a blinding hotspot on a dark stage.
Both have flat lens surfaces, but the concave variant has a dished-inward lens that increases the viewing angle to 150-180 degrees (vs 105-115 for standard flat top). Choose concave when you need maximum coverage — gauge cluster backlighting, large-area illumination. Choose standard flat top for most other applications.
Yes. Some people search for square LEDs when they mean flat top — the flat lens face gives a squared-off appearance compared to the domed round top. Flat top, flat head, and square LED all refer to the same product category.

DC power recommended: LEDs are designed for DC. Running on AC will cause flickering and reduce lifespan. If you're using a low-voltage AC source — such as a model railroad transformer output or DCC track voltage — convert it to DC first with a bridge rectifier.
