Description / 12v 5mm Cube Frosted Lens LED - Red LED - Ultra Bright (7v-15v)

The 5mm Red 12V LED with Built-In Resistor (Cube) connects directly to any 7V–15V DC power source — no external resistor required. The internal current-limiting resistor is built into the LED body itself. Connect the anode (long lead) to positive, cathode (short lead) to ground, and it lights up at the correct brightness. The frosted cube body scatters light at a wide angle — producing a soft, even glow instead of a focused beam.

The 5mm (T-1¾) head is the most widely used standard DIP size. Scales well for HO (1:87) and O (1:48) scale structures, RC crawler headlights, and panel-mount indicators.

Who uses these?

  • Automotive gauge cluster and HVAC backlighting: brake/warning indicator, taillights, dashboard warning. The frosted body spreads light evenly behind gauge faces, HVAC control panels, and dashboard trim — no hotspots or bright-center/dark-edges problem. Drop-in for GM Silverado/Sierra, Toyota, Ford, Honda, and Jeep instrument clusters. Also illuminates climate control buttons and radio bezels evenly.
  • Model railroad building interiors: block signal (stop aspect), grade crossing, yard limit indicator. The frosted body fills HO and N scale structures with a realistic, even room glow — no harsh spotlight. Wire directly to your 12V accessory bus. One LED per room is usually enough.
  • Christmas village and Department 56 displays: Light up Lemax, Department 56, and other miniature village buildings from inside. The wide-angle scatter illuminates the whole interior, not just a narrow cone.
  • PC case modding: Mount inside the case cavity for ambient internal glow. Tap 12V from a spare Molex yellow wire — the frosted body prevents a single bright dot and fills the case with red light.
  • RV, camper, and marine: Tuck behind panels or under cabinets for soft accent illumination off your 12V house battery. The frosted body prevents harsh glare.
  • Escape room and Halloween props: Wire into your 12V prop bus for dungeon torches, altar candles, control panel indicators. The diffused glow looks more natural than a focused beam.

Why built-in resistor?

No resistor calculator needed. Standard LEDs require you to calculate and solder an external resistor for every voltage — get it wrong and the LED burns out instantly. These LEDs have a current limiter built into the lens itself. Connect to anything from 7V to 15V and they regulate themselves to 20mA.

We don’t recommend running them continuously at 15V, but they handle occasional voltage spikes — this is particularly useful in automotive applications where charging systems routinely push 14–15V. With all that said, if your project allows it, using a standard LED with an external resistor is still the best practice. It keeps the heat further away from the diode itself, which extends lifespan. But when space is tight or simplicity matters, these 12V built-in resistor LEDs are the solution.

Important notes

  • Polarity matters: Long lead = positive (+), short lead = negative (−). Reversing polarity will not damage the LED, but it will not light.
  • DC only: Do not connect directly to AC. For model railroad AC transformers or DCC track power, convert to DC first with a bridge rectifier.
  • Does not fit standard round LED holders. The square body is best secured with hot glue, adhesive, or friction-fit into a square cutout.

Need a focused beam instead? See our 12V 5mm Round Top LEDs — standard 5mm form factor that fits all LED holders and bezels.

Need pre-wired instead?

If you need wire leads already attached, see our 12V Pre-Wired LEDs — same built-in resistor concept but with 6" pre-soldered leads and heat-shrink protected connections. No soldering required at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The current-limiting resistor is built into the LED body. Connect directly to any 7V-15V DC source.
Yes. Automotive electrical systems run at 12-14.5V, which is within the 7V-15V operating range. The built-in resistor handles voltage fluctuations from the charging system.
Round top has a clear lens with a focused beam — best for indicators, signals, and panel mounts. Cube has a frosted body that scatters light at a wide angle — best for area illumination, building interiors, and backlighting. Round top fits standard LED holders; cube does not.
No. This LED requires DC power. For AC sources (model railroad transformers, landscape lighting), convert to DC first with a bridge rectifier.

DC power recommended: LEDs are designed for DC. Running on AC will cause flickering and reduce lifespan. If you're using a low-voltage AC source — such as a model railroad transformer output or DCC track voltage — convert it to DC first with a bridge rectifier.
