The 5mm Straw Hat UV Purple LED delivers a 120-150 Degrees viewing angle from a low-profile, flat body — the widest beam of any standard non-concave DIP LED. Where round-top LEDs focus light into a narrow forward cone, the straw hat floods a wide area below and to the sides. This makes it the natural choice for area lighting in models, displays, and any build where you need light to spread rather than focus.

Why straw hat?
A standard round-top 5mm LED concentrates its output into a 15–30 degree cone. The straw hat spreads that same output across 120-150 Degrees. Think of it as flood vs. spot: the straw hat floods a wide area with even light, while a round-top spotlights a single point. Neither is “better” — they serve different purposes.
Common applications
- Model railroad streetlamps and area lighting: blacklight/UV effects (escape rooms. Mount inverted inside a lamppost housing and the wide beam floods a realistic pool of light at ground level. One straw hat replaces 2–3 round-tops for the same coverage area. Scales: HO (1:87), N (1:160).
- Christmas village and holiday displays: haunted houses. The wide angle means one LED lights up an entire miniature building interior.
- Automotive gauge cluster backlighting: The wide beam provides even illumination behind gauge faces without hotspots — same principle as flat top LEDs but with an even wider spread.
- Architectural models: Interior room lighting for presentation models. The wide angle fills rooms evenly at 1:100 and 1:200 scale.
- Cosplay and prop lighting: Behind translucent armor panels, inside helmet visors, under frost-effect prop surfaces. The wide spread creates an even glow without visible point sources.
