Description / 5mm Blue LED - Ultra Bright .5 Watt

The 5mm 0.5W Blue High Power LED delivers significantly more output than standard 20mA indicator LEDs — built for applications where brightness matters: flashlight builds, grow lights, reef aquarium fixtures, stage lighting, and DIY fishing lights.

Blue/royal blue wavelength is critical for reef aquarium coral growth (zooxanthellae photosynthesis) and drives dramatic coral fluorescence.

Type5mm 0.5W
Forward Voltage3.2-3.4v
Brightness10-15 lm (Lumens)
Viewing Angle20-30 Degrees
Drive Current100-120mA
Power.5 Watt

Mounting: Standard 5mm (T-1¾) through-hole package. Runs at higher current than standard 20mA LEDs — use the appropriate resistor value for your supply voltage.

Common applications

  • Primary: DIY flashlight builds (BudgetLightForum, CandlePowerForums), reef aquarium lighting (royal blue 450–460nm drives coral growth and fluorescence — Reef2Reef community), UV curing setup accent
  • DIY flashlight modification: Replace or upgrade the emitter in Convoy S2+, Emisar D4V2, Noctigon, Maglite, and P60 drop-in hosts. The flashlight modding community (BudgetLightForum, CandlePowerForums, r/flashlight) is the largest buyer of individual high-power star LEDs.
  • Stage and theatrical lighting: Build RGBW par cans and spot fixtures with individually driven color channels. DMX-controllable with constant-current drivers.
  • Machine vision and inspection: High-power illumination for camera inspection systems, UV fluorescence inspection, and industrial quality control.

Power and thermal management

These 0.5W LEDs run at higher current than standard 20mA LEDs but are still standard through-hole packages — no heatsink is needed. Ensure your power supply can deliver the required current and use appropriately rated resistors or a constant-current driver. A constant-current LED driver is recommended for multi-LED arrays, but a properly sized resistor works fine for individual LEDs.

Pair with

  • Power supplies — constant-current LED drivers (Meanwell LDD recommended)

Frequently Asked Questions

No. These are standard through-hole LEDs that run at higher current than typical 20mA LEDs, but they do not require a heatsink. Just ensure your resistor or driver is rated for the current draw.
You can, but a constant-current driver (like the Meanwell LDD series) is strongly recommended for multi-LED arrays. It maintains consistent brightness and prevents thermal runaway. If using a resistor, calculate for the full drive current and use a resistor rated for at least 2x the dissipated wattage.
Higher wattage means more light output but also more heat and higher current requirements. 1W is suitable for small flashlights and accent lighting. 3W is the sweet spot for DIY flashlights, grow light arrays, and reef fixtures. 10W is for flood lights, projector builds, and high-output applications requiring substantial heatsinking.

DC power recommended: LEDs are designed for DC. Running on AC will cause flickering and reduce lifespan. If you're using a low-voltage AC source — such as a model railroad transformer output or DCC track voltage — convert it to DC first with a bridge rectifier.

Sold individually (1 LED per quantity ordered).
