Here we have a general purpose diode, 1N4001. The 1N4001 is an extremely common diode used in many circuits and will surely be needed in your kit at some point, we can almost guarantee this. We have found them useful in many situations. If you are not familiar with what a diode is for then we can give you a quick explanation. This particular diode will help protect your small circuits from reverse voltage damage. Of course, there are many other uses and application for them as well. For instance, another simple example, is if you simply don't want current going a particular way in your circuit. This is an extremely easy solution.
The 1N4001 diode does have polarity. The line indicates the cathode or negative side and unmarked side is the anode or positive side. Current will flow freely through the diode from the positive through the negative side (marked with a line).
The forward voltage is the voltage drop across the diode if the voltage at the anode is more positive than the voltage at the cathode (if you connect + to the anode).
